Airport security ever give anybody trouble trying to carry your GPS unit onto the plane? I'm a little worried about checking it because I don't think they will give me the full value if they lose my bags.

As a road warrier, Ive been through security hundreds of times. There is no reason they would object to a GPS. Just put it out like a PC or cell phone, and dont turn it on during flight.

I sure am taking my new one on-board with me! At this price it will no leave my sight while travelling!

I agree with the previous post as I travel all the time also. The only thing I would say is that you cannot turn it on during take off and landing but during the flight it's fine to have turned on. I have had it on from terminal to terminal on a couple of flights and nothing was said.

Initially I would stash my GPS into my luggage. But the last time I flew, I had it in my carry on and showed it security just like my cell phone, and laptop. Never got questioned eventhough they had more problems trying to get people to take off their shoes.

During the in-flight safety announcements, there is always a statement that says not to turn on receiving equipment. Transmitting, I understand but receiving?

As I understand, if you ask, you may be permitted to turn on your GPS during flight (of course not take-off and landing).

The next question would be would my GPSMAP 76CSx receive satellite signals in the ailse seats or would I still need to press it against the window?

I never put anything electronic in my checked luggage, everything comes on the plane with me. Your's 76CSx should have no problem aquiring on the plane. My old Legend C was able to aquire if I held it in the window so you should be just fine.

The reasoning behind not wanting to have any electronics on during take off and landing is, I believe, these are the most critical times for the plane. Even though an electronic device doesn't transmitt, they all give off some sort of signal due to the electronics. I think they are just trying to cover all the bases and make it safer.

That being said, I alway have my GPS on during take off and landing unless they notice me and tell me to turn if off. I've never had a plane fall out from under me.

It'll be great to track where you are during flight. On a recent flight between Toronto and Los Angeles, I guess I was over Nevada when the landscape looked like the Grand Canyon although I knew we were too far north.

On another occasion, flying from Hong Kong to Johannesburg,South Africa, the overhead monitors showed us over the Indian Ocean but didn't indicate where the equator was. I asked the flight attendant but they just don't seem to have a clue about things like that.

In a recent news story, eight (?) baggage handlers from the Pearson Int'l Airport (Toronto) were arrested for stealing luggage or luggage contents. So your worries are well supported.

I've actually asked twice on a commercial flight if I could use the GPS. The stewardess went to the Captain each time and the response was it was OK to use except on take-off and landing. As for those who say they have used it during take-off and landing, and they are still here to hear to talk about it, I guess we will never know just how much it may have swung those needles.

My latest trip was from Toronto to Beijing for the 2009 Solar Eclipse. Had it on from airport to airport with no problems from the staff. it was neat checking to closest approach to the north pole.
