How to create custom POI? Roadmate 1412

I bought a refurbished Roadmate 1412 from tigerdirect. The add page for the unit had a special large icon that advertised this unit as being able to create custom POIs. As of yet I have been unable to find a way to do it. When I I try to go to my POIs it keep saying, "Please insert an SD card containing My POIs". Well my unit did not come with an SD card. In fact in had a piece of plastic glued over the SD card port. I have a lot of SD cards lying around so I reformatted one to FAT and stuck it in the unit. Now it just keeps saying, "Please enable a POI file in the My POIs section." I have found no way to do this. Can someone please help me. Thanks.

I solved the problem

all on my own. My unit came with software CD with a program on it called, Magellan POI file Editor. I put the SD card in the unit and connected it to my computer with the USB cable and then created a test POI in the program and transfered it to my unit. Everything started working after that. I can now create custom POIs and favorites. Is it possible that I am the first person to figure this out?
