Garmin Mobile PC Software with GPS 20x Receiver, HELP!!

OK, I'm new at this, so please keep it simple. I have a ETREX VISTA, with Map Source TOPO's. What I want to do is to get my laptop with gps20x or anything else to work and display just like my Vista does. I was told that I needed "NROUTE software". Can anyone give me some advice as to how and if it will work?
